Miguel Aguilera Lizarraga about

I am an Ikerbasque Research Fellow and la Caixa Junior Leader Fellow at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, working at the interface of areas like complex systems, computational neuroscience, statistical physics and machine learning. I’m interested in understanding the emergence of adaptive behaviour, autonomy and agency at different levels of living entities - from biological to mental and social life. I’m particularly interested in situated, embodied and dynamical approaches to cognition, where the importance of bodily and sensorimotor interaction to cognitive processes is considered. I combine nonlinear, dynamical computational models with methods from statistical physics, information theory and dynamical systems theory, with the goal of developing and understanding models of agency in neuroscience, artificial life, robotics and collective systems. If you are interested in pursuing a PhD in these areas, let me know!

Miguel Aguilera Lizarraga about

Previously, I was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie research fellow at the University of Sussex in the School of Engineering and Informatics and Sussex Neuroscience working with Chris Buckley. I have worked in the past as a postdoc at the IAS-Research Center for Life, Mind and Society under the supervision of Ezequiel Di Paolo, the Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems with Toni Gomila and the Aragon Institute of Engineering Research with Manuel Bedia. During this time, I had the chance to visit and collaborate with Hideaki Shimazaki’s lab at the Kyoto University Cooperative Intelligence Research Chair.

I did my PhD funded by a FPU grant from the Spanish Education Ministry, entitled Interaction Dynamics and Autonomy in Cognitive Systems, focused on the development of operational models of sensorimotor agency, co-supervised by Manuel Bedia and Xabier Barandiaran. As well, I participated in the Datanalysis15M research network, applying complex systems tools to complex social networks related to the 15M movement in Spain.
